Hennessy is the oldest Cognac house, founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy. Today it is owned by LVMH.

Hennessy was founded by Richard Hennessy (1689-1770), who was born in Ireland and deported to France as a political prisoner during the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1761, he purchased Château de Cognac from Louis de Hocquart, Intendant des finances. At that time Château de Cognac was a vineyard of 7 hectares producing wine for local consumption.

In 1765, Richard Hennessy created his first blend of eaux-de-vie under his own name: "Hennessy". He quickly became one of the world's most famous distillers and his reputation reached as far as Paris, where he was appointed supplier to King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. In 1805, Napoleon created a new system whereby all producers were forced to use only second rate grapes in their blends. This move hurt Hennessy's business since he used only top quality grapes from his vineyards. However in 1820, when Napoleon lifted this ban on good quality grapes, Hennessy decided not to recover his old position

Hennessy cognac is a brand produced by French company Hennessy, in Cognac, France. It is the world's top-selling cognac with $3 billion in annual sales and 90% of the market share.

The Hennessy logo is a lion (or "lion passant"), which has been its symbol since 1874. The company also produces other distilled beverages, including flavored liqueurs such as the Jagermeister line of herbal liquors.

Hennessy's parent company, LVMH, bought Moët & Chandon in 1988, giving it control over both brands. In July 2002, Hennessy merged with Moët-Hennessy (Mumm champagne) to form LVMH's Champagne and Spirits division.
